Our train journey continued on 5th May, till we reach our destination Ambala with lots of energy and interaction with the co-passengers. After that we boarded the bus to proceed to Manali. We enjoyed very much in bus by singing songs and shouting slogans. On the way we visited Gurudwara and had chapattis as prasadam and donated Rs200 from whole in donation box for food to other pilgrims.

On 6thMay, early mornings we reached the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali. All of us had registered our names in the Institute. Shri D.P Rana, senior mountaineering supervisor had briefed us regarding the Institute, tips for mountaineering and about the schedule for the trip i.e. from 6th to 15thMay 2010. Then, we proceeded to the museum, where we saw different types of old and modern equipments used for mountaineering. We had also seen some photos of people who had climbed the Mount Everest like Baldev Singh had climbed on 16thMay 1993, Deepu Sharma had climbed on 16thMay 1993.      On 7th May, the day started with the morning exercises. One of our participant celebrated his birthday. Then, we proceeded for rock climbing by trekking through jungles. In the evening, we proceeded to Hadimba and Ghatotkach temples.

On 8thMay, we proceeded to Sholang Nalla by trekking through rocks. It was about 14 km away from the base camp. After lunch, we went for acclimatization walk. Then, instructors gave information regarding the surroundings of the Sholang Nalla; such as Dholadhar range, Peer panjal range, Patalsu peak- 13,339ft; Sholang village, beas river and about the skiing point –Fathru.

About Beas River

Temperature is approx. 100C.

Beas river story-

Maharishi Vedvyas who told Mahabharata used to take bath near Vedvyas Kund which is 12,000 from the sea level and the depth of the sea is not yet discovered.

On 9thMay, we went for rappelling. We rappelled down the 60 ft high rock with the guidance of instructors. While rappelling down the rock, we had used clove hitch knot which was used to anchor one end of the rope to the rock and figure of eight was used on the other end anchored to the karabiner of the seat harness. There was no knot used in the middle of the rope. While doing this everyone overcome their fear and performed it very well. It was very interesting. After the lunch, we proceeded to Anjani Mahadev Temple by trekking through rocks. It was about 3 km from the camp. It was nearly 8,500 ft from the sea. In Anjani Mahadev Temple, there was a waterfall falling from a height of 100 ft from the base of the temple to the Shivaling. We came to know from the instructors that in the winter season the water turns to snowfall and it forms a 70 ft tall Shivaling.

On 10thMay, we had preceded our journey to Dhundi. It was nearly 7 km away from Sholang Nalla. It is situated at a height of 9,350 ft. While trekking to Dhundi we saw many slogans written by Border Road Organization (BRO) such as “No race No rally, Enjoy the beauty of valley”. After reaching our destination everyone had taken bath in the Beas River. After sometime, there had a heavy rainfall. There we saw mountain sheeps and had interacted with the people coming from Beas Kund. After the lunch, we had gone for acclimatization walk and the enjoyed the beauty of nature. Instructors gave us the information about the surroundings if the Dhundi. The flora that was found there was Oak trees, Virch trees, Himalayan maple, Silver fur, Wild spinach (Romax), Wild cherry, Marsh marigold and some medicinal plants such as Batata which was used to treat Cancer etc. On the right side of Beas River the Peer Panjal Range is situated and the Dholadhar Range is situated on the left side of the Beas River. The highest point of Dholadhar Range is Hanuman Tibba which is located at the height of 19,450 ft from the sea. Dev Tibba is situated at the height of 6,001 ft from the sea. Indra Aasan is located at the height of 6,221 ft from the sea. In the mountains, there were some barrier trees which were used to stop the avalanche. There was also a Snow and Avalanche Study Centre which was used to study the avalanche. We got tents to stay in the night. We had experienced to stay in the tents. We enjoyed very much in it.

On 11thMay, all of us had proceeded to Bhakratach and Beas Kund and the instructors guided us to had snow walking in Bhakratach. When we reached to the snow, we started making and throwing snow balls to one another. When we saw two of our instructors sliding from a height then we also started to slide. We took plastic covers, spread it on the snow and sat on it. It automatically started sliding on the snow. We enjoyed very much in the snow and played a lot. It was the thrilling event and no one can forget it. And there also, one of our participants had celebrated his birthday. While returning the guiders had came to know us many things such as different names of Mount Everest are Chuma Luma, Ganga Sagar, Gauri Shankar and the Mount Everest, Nanda Nath Shankar had discovered the Mount Everest, the Scandinium is the oldest mountain in the world situated in Australia about 400 million years old and the Mount Everest is nearly 40 million years old; the Mount Everest was named after a man called George Everest from England who had send Nanda Nath Shankar to discover the Mount Everest. Today also we had stayed in the tents. We had enjoyed by singing songs and having competition of singing songs.

On 12thMay, before returning back to Sholang Nalla we had Kiwi Parade. In Kiwi Parade, we had collected all the waste material from the surroundings of the Dhundi and thrown it into the dustbin where the all waste was thrown. After breakfast, we had proceeded back to the Sholang Nalla.

On 13thMay, we had gone for river crossing by trekking through the jungle. We had done river crossing by different methods like bamboo system, chain system and taraulin travel etc. It was interesting and enjoyable. In the evening, one of our participants had celebrated his birthday.

National Green Corps:

On the day one , that is on 11th January, the students environmental congress was inaugurated by our respected education officer, Madam Vidyulatha Rao.

The first program was Mock Eco Parliament in which we discussed about the burning topics of latest environmental issues such as global warming, which was followed by band practice and competitions in which our school was one among the best three schools out of 18 schools and then we had our lunch break for around 30 minutes, which was followed by the cultural program. After that we had our tea break and dispersed  awaiting eagerly and enthusiastically for the events to be held the next day.

On the next day that is on 12th

we all assembled in the school library and then we were asked to move to the ground for parade practice.  we were given parade practice by one of officials of Indian Air Force.

And then we had our parade competitions  which was followed by lunch break. After that  we again assembled in the library to welcome our Assistant Commissioner  Sri  Selvaraj  and NGC Director Sri Prasanna Kumar and also the team members of CSE from Delhi and Ethopia in Africa  who visited us as observers  to check the implementations of the audit books in schools in India  which were designed by CSE  and were received by us from NGC. Later,   from library we were asked to disperse  to various rooms according to our teams that is Land , Water,  Waste, Biodiversity or energy for our school audit representations.

In each room there was a CSE observer from Ethopia, and an audit presentation was followed by the environmental quiz. We then assembled back in library for    valedictory function.

Our school was among the best 3 out of 18 schools in two categories,   one is band and the other one is in audit presentation. But at the end of the program we realized that participating is more important than winning a prize as told by our Assistant Commissioner Sri Selvaraj who gave a wonderful speech in the valedictory function,   a message that we would treasure throughout our lives.
